Me MUHINDO MULUMBI Jackson, is sensitizing the Gender to save the planet, as always, by her courage, through the present topic :《 Gender and climate change. The impact of climate change on women and their integration in decisions related to the climate. 》

0. INTRODUCTION

Talking about women and environment, let us start by the words from the Poet Victor Hugo. For him: 《 A man is the highest of creatures; a woman is the most sublime of ideals. The man is capable of all heroism; the woman of all martyrs. Heroism ennobles; Martyr sublimes. A man thinks; a woman fancies. Thinking is having a larva in the skull; Fancing is having an aureole on one’s forehead. 》

Why do I call out for women to pay more attention on the issue of environment ? For me, the best word is not to call them. It is rather to remind them that they have been the first to think about environment, as we will read in the following lines. Men just think about something for which the women are the real pioneers.

In fact, basically and for instance, the Latin language, mother of several European languages that have become cultural in the world, the word “environment” does not have any other equivalent than the word “nature” : natura, naturae, which is in the feminine gender. Honour therefore to the women who already communicate their nature to the environment. If man speculates in matters related to nature, the woman is by the way the song that conquers the soul !

This subject, in the context of gender equality in Africa, reminds the women of what they are through four points : The woman is that creature that saves the god who will say yes to the being (the tree) that saves nature, by rejecting war (I). The woman wins the contest to dedicate her name to the City of Athens (II). Tree and the forests, irreplaceable guards of the climatic balance, are of the feminine gender (III). Finally, the special place of the woman in the concern about saving the planet, following history and the Rio Declaration of June 3 to 14, 1992 (IV).

I. THE WOMAN, THE CREATURE THAT SAVES A GOD WHO WILL SAY YES TO THE BEING (THE TREE) THAT SAVES THE NATURE BY REJECTING THE WAR.

The prize of the initiator of environmental issues is for the women. One of them, according to the mythology, saved her son, with the complicity of another woman, a servant, the son who became the master of the world and took the right side about environment. It is reported that :《 Rhea, Saturn’s wife, was the mother of Jupiter. Saturn used to devour all his sons cruelly. After his birth, Jupiter was sent to his mother’s trusted (loyal) servant. The servant took with her the child to the island of Crete and hid him from views [kept him in secret] in a hidden cave. The cave was wide (spacious) and deep [impenetrable]; its rock walls were covered with dense ivy (evergreen plant). Many numphs lived there and particularly received this small child (god) and placed him in a golden cradle. The goat Amalthea gave a lot of milk to the divine child and benevolent bees made for him sweetest honey. Every day a line of doves flew from the sea to the cave and offered ambrosia [food that gave immortality to those who tasted it] to the son of Saturn. Every day, moreover, a great eagle flew down from the high mountains, and this famous sacred bird provided the child’s needs with the most pleasant nectar, the drink of the gods and goddesses. Thus, in the manner of the immortal gods, Jupiter was fed. 》

In short, Rhea, a woman, offers to saturn, seated on his throne, a stone wrapped in swadding clothes, which he devoured, believing to devour the little Jupiter. And her servant contributes to this saving action of a god who will prefer the environment than the war in competition.

II. JUPITER GIVES TO A WOMAN THE PRICE OF DEDICATION OF HER NAME TO THE CITY OF ATHENS, BECAUSE THE WOMAN CARED ABOUT THE NATURE.

The world owes all its culture (belles-lettres, liberal arts, music, science and others) to the Athens City thanks to the environment vision of woman. According to the 52 principles of the Rio Declaration of June 03 to 14, 1992 《 peace, development and environmental protection are interdependent and indivisible. 》 Jupiter therefore understood that the environment example of woman was aimed at peace, development and environmental protection.

It is reported in fact that : 《 Neptune, god of the sea and Athena, goddess of wisdom, had both come to Jupiter. The point is that Neptune and Athena each other wanted to name the new Atique City. They thus wanted to have Jupiter’s opinion. Then Jupiter said to them: “Whoever will give the best present to the inhabitants, will also give his name to the City!” Neptune was the first to speak: “Me, I offer them the horse, a well-known animal: it will charm for a long time to the eyes of all, in the fields as in the arena.” Others report that : “Neptune was the first to strike the rock with his trident. Immediately a fountain of salt water sprang up from it alone and a horse was seen, which was a sign of courage in war.” Subsequently, Athena heard these words: Me, I present to them the Olive tree, without a doubt, the most humble tree. Yet it will not please only to the inhabitants of the new City, but in addition it will benefit much to all of humanity.” Others also narrate that “at the stroke of her pike, Athena made a hole in the ground. Suddenly, the Olive tree laden with leaves and fruits grew towards the sky.” It is then that Jupiter, and other gods in presence, decide in these terms : “Your presents are beautiful and very advantageous. But the horse is useful in wars. Whereas, the Olive tree will be the symbol of peace. That’s why Athena’s present is the best. This is how the name Athena lives, even now, in the name of Athens.》

In short, where the man (Neptune) thought on world’s conquest through wars, the woman (Athena or Minerva) thought about the world’s protection by the tree. Every tree is a symbol of peace; it even protects people, even by simple breathing. From this peaceful environmental act, Athens was flourishing to give this peace to philosophers and all scientists, the time to discover theoretical and practical lessons that we benefit until now.

III. THE TREE AND THE FORESTS, IRREPLACEABLE GUARDS OF THE CLIMATIC BALANCE, ARE OF THE FEMININE GENDER.

Generally, things always carry the design of their designer. The imprints of the things that maintain the climatic balance have kept feminine traces.

According to the linguist MEILLET : 《 It is curious that in general, the names of indo-European trees are of the feminine gender, and the names of fruits are in the neutral gender: the tree was considered as a kind of female that produces fruits. The names of the tree of the second Latin declension in particular constitute the largest group of feminine names; even though this declension is of the masculine gender.》

If in French, the word “arbre” (tree) did not fall into the masculine gender, unlike all the Indo-European languages including Latin where every tree is “a feminine being” because taken for mother of fruits, the word “forêt” (forest) however resorts there to authenticity by taking feminine nature. The beauty and merit of the French language will have been to envelop and crown abundance with the feminine. For this language, it was a matter of drowning the specimens, thus generically masculine, in a feminine flood becoming an altar to sanctify everything.

Why should not women be faithful to themselves, continuing what they started ? Wouldn’t their lifelong courage still be necessary at this time when the world is collapsing with the climate change ? In this way, I beg my mothers, sisters, aunts (women) all over the world to lend their kind ears to these things. Better, they can cry for the environment, because where our environmental voices stop, there is no better condiment in the world than the tears of our Mothers to season all the environmental recipes !

IV. THE SPECIAL PLACE OF A WOMAN IN THE DESIRE TO SAVE THE PLANET, FOLLOWING HISTORY AND THE RIO DECLARATION OF JUNE 03 TO 14, 1992.

Firstly, women have historically remained necessary.

In fact, if 《 the most beautiful trees have been dedicated to deities, such as the Olive tree to Athena (Minerva) and the Myrtle to Aphrodite (Venus)》, it is an irrefutable and irrevocable proof that women have remained essential in environmental decisions. Indeed, the Olive tree is that tree that survived the flood both in the Bible and in mythology. It is the tree whose ointment or refined oil eternally heals all mankind. The Woman must thus eternally make humanity survive the flood and heal it eternally, like the Olive tree. The Myrtle is this kind of evergreen shrubs. Who says evergreen or “sempervirent” in French, talks about what is always or constantly covered with leaves (from Latin semper : always, and virens : green). Myrtle is thus perenifolate plant (a plant that has inexhaustible leaves). The Myrtle, Aphrodite’s plant, is a tree of love. This communicates that a woman must always keep her favours and love in environmental matters. In environmental issues men have their brain; women their heart. When the brain makes the light; the heart makes love. The light fertilizes, love resuscitates, says Victor Hugo. Women, through your Myrtle, your place in decisions concerning the climate, resurrect the world which regenerates plants, as you were the first to give the signal through Athena !

Legally and democratically, their place is essential.

In fact, legally, when the Rio declaration says that all human beings without any distinction are at the centre of environmental protection (see principles 1 and 12), the same Declaration places an acute emphasis on gender by providing in principle 20 this : 《 Women have a vital role in environmental management and development. Their full participation is therefore essential to achieve sustainable development.》 Women, you will never stop giving us life. The world’s life depends primarily on you !

As democracy is the rule of the greatest number, numerically women prevail and could therefore be proud to save the world earlier. They have the dignity to remain pioneers, if they give more of their voices to the nature in unison !

With my best regards to the women and for a successful gender equality !
